Australia’s premier batsman Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket. The announcement comes after Australia’s loss in the Champions Trophy semi-final against India, where Smith played a crucial knock of 73 runs.
The 35-year-old Smith played 170 matches in his ODI career, scoring 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, icluding 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He played a key role in Australia winning the World Cup in 2015 and 2023.
Smith said Test cricket will remain his priority, and he is looking forward to playing in the upcoming World Test Championship final, the series against West Indies, and the home series against England.
Cricket Australia chief selector George Bailey supported Smith’s decision and lauded his outstanding ODI career.
Smith’s retirement from ODIs is a turning point for Australian cricket, but his fans will continue to watch him play in Test and T20 formats.
