EDITORIAL | Carlo Ancelotti Appointed as Brazil’s New Head Coach Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has officially confirmed that Carlo Ancelotti, one of the most decorated managers in world football, has been appointed as the head coach of the Brazilian national team. The 65-year-old Italian tactician will lead the Seleção through the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign and into the tournament itself.

The announcement was made on Monday by CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues, who described Ancelotti’s arrival as a “historic step” for Brazilian football. The coach, renowned for his calm demeanor and unparalleled record across Europe’s top leagues, is expected to take charge following the conclusion of the La Liga season on May 26, marking the end of his current tenure at Real Madrid.

Ancelotti’s coaching credentials are unrivaled. With four UEFA Champions League titles and league victories in Italy, England, France, Germany, and Spain, he now becomes the first European manager in nearly six decades to helm the Brazilian national team — a team synonymous with flair, rhythm, and global football prestige.

His appointment follows the dismissal of Dorival Júnior, who managed the team for just over a year. Dorival’s stint came to an abrupt end after a demoralizing 1–4 loss to Argentina on March 1, 2025. During his time in charge, he oversaw 16 matches, registering seven wins, six draws, and three defeats.

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) issued an enthusiastic welcome to Ancelotti, hailing his arrival as a “giant collaboration” and a significant boost for South American football.

Ancelotti’s immediate task will be to prepare Brazil for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay next month. As Brazil looks to end its 24-year World Cup title drought, expectations will be high. With Ancelotti at the helm, the Seleção may have found a steady and strategic leader capable of blending Brazil’s traditional attacking brilliance with the tactical discipline of European football..
