| Matchday Review | 2024/25 Premier League
Another frustrating day at the office for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, as they were held to a 0-0 draw by a disciplined Southampton side at St. Mary’s. City had all the possession, all the territory—but ultimately, none of the goals.
Let’s be honest: this felt like two points dropped.
From the first whistle, City looked in control. Kevin De Bruyne was pulling the strings as usual, spraying passes, whipping in dangerous set-pieces, and trying to breathe life into the attack. But no matter what we threw at them—headers from Akanji, a big chance for Haaland, Foden’s tricky runs—Southampton just wouldn’t break.
Credit where it’s due: Southampton were rock solid. Jan Bednarek and the returning Aaron Ramsdale were standout performers. Ramsdale, in particular, made some key stops, including one from Savinho late on that looked destined for the back of the net.
Guardiola tried to shake things up—bringing on Doku, then Savinho and O’Reilly—but the breakthrough never came. It wasn’t for lack of effort, but it felt like the cutting edge was missing. Again.
Southampton even had their moments going forward. Marmoush nearly nicked it near the end, and Lesley Ugochukwu was everywhere in midfield (even if he was a bit overzealous, racking up fouls and a yellow card).
So where does this leave us? Still in the race, sure. But with games like this, it’s clear: if City want to retain the crown, they can’t afford too many more of these scoreless stalemates. Possession is great, but goals win titles.
A point gained? Maybe. But it definitely feels more like two lost.
