The term “tuk tuk” in cricket is often used to describe slow or defensive batting. Pakistan’s so called king, Babar Azam, has faced criticism for his batting approach, with some suggesting he prioritizes personal milestones over team objectives.
In a recent ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match against New Zealand, Babar scored 60 runs off 90 balls, a strike rate below 80, during a chase of 321 runs. Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif criticized this performance, stating that Babar appeared to play for personal gain rather than the team’s needs. Kaif highlighted that Babar’s cautious approach, including playing 52 dot balls and hitting only two boundaries against spinners, contributed to Pakistan’s defeat.
Similarly, ex-Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel labeled Babar as a “selfish player” and questioned his leadership. Patel emphasized that when a captain prioritizes personal performance over team success, it negatively impacts the entire squad. He also noted that Pakistan’s current team appears weaker compared to previous eras, partly due to such leadership issues.
However, Babar has previously addressed such criticisms. In 2019, he stated that he plays according to the team’s plan and focuses on building partnerships, especially after early wickets. Babar emphasized that his role isn’t necessarily to maintain a high strike rate but to stabilize the innings as per the team’s requirements.
